Thank you to everyone who replied to my query.

I have been planning this upgrade for some time now and I was really put off
when the "Mac" guy (only two months worth of familiarity) at the campus
computer store told me it wasn't possible to do a processor upgrade on Macs.
"You'll have to buy a new computer" he said.

I went ahead and gave him the machine to do the hard drive upgrade. We
talked for awhile and it seemed he had been on the Apple website since I had
talked to him on the phone and at least understood that I'd probably need a
controller if I were putting in a faster HD. I didn't get much more
technical with him than that. I think the ZIF upgrade will have to be done
by someone else. I don't doubt this guy could plug the thing in. I just
don't think he understands how it interacts with the system as a whole
(neither do I).

Thanks again for all the good advice pointing me in the right direction.
