Actually, I've been poking around and I can't access most of my old
documents (even the ones that were Word files).

Here's what happens:

OS X seems to be working except. . . when I try to open old document it
doesn't immediately open them in Classic (as the books say). I can go to
classic to open some applications but not documents.

When I start my computer it goes into OSX and on the desktop I get two disk
images HD and HD2. At first I thought HD2 was the old drive but then
sometimes when I boot up I get HD, HD2 and Old Drive. So then I thought HD2
was the second partition. The contents of HD seem to be pretty much OSX.
HD2 has two folders; "Desktop" which is empty and "Backup" which appears to
have everything that was on my old drive. When "Old Drive" shows up it has
"Backup" and and empty "Desktop" but "Backup" only has OS 9 stuff (not my
documents).

When I go to set a new startup disk from X I'm given a choice of OS 9.2 on
HD or OS 10.2.3 on HD (no mention of HD2 or Old Drive although I did get
more options one of the times I did this). If I start up in 9.2 it restarts
and part way through the screen resolution changes and then I'm given a
desktop with none of the settings I had previously. Then I get a message
asking me to initialize the disk and a little yellow dialog box that says
the "Drive HD" is damaged (I thought before it said that "Old Drive" was
damaged but now I'm not sure what it said the last few times I booted into
OS9. When I go into the "Backup" folder while I'm in 9 I can't access any
of my old stuff (or I can sporadically access things). The Word2000
documents won't open and I get a message saying that I need to have OSX (and
when I'm in OSX some of the old Word files give me the option of selecting
Word X to open them and some simply say they can't be opened). Like I said,
I can't get to the applications while in OS9; instead of program icons I
have document icons and they won't open.

When I look in "OS X The Missing Manual" he makes it sound as though you can
reboot in 9 and use it just like you used to. And if you're in X you can
effortlessly get access through Classic. These parts don't seem to be
communicating on my machine.

I am wondering if the tech guy wiped out my OS 9 stuff completely and all I
have left are file directories (so I can see listings) and the 9.2 system
software but not all the files. I backed up my documents before the upgrade
but if I can't really go back and forth between OSX and OS 9 I'm not going
to find this upgrade useful.

Any suggestions for figuring this puzzle out would be most appreciated.
