G'day Anastasia

You can change your computers name from the Sharing panel in System
Preferences, but I still haven't found a way to alter short names.

The X installer insists on a two part computer name, but I soon changed
mine to Santa.

I think the short names are locked because Unix won't allow more than
one user to have the same short name.

They only way is to create a new user, set it up correctly, then
(eventually) delete the old one.

If you know how, you can reset the privileges of your old account, move
the new one to the trash, copy the old (don't just shift) and drag them
to your new one, re-name (remove the space-'copy') and once satisfied,
reset all privileges in your new account before removing the old. When
you delete the old account (from System Preferences:Accounts), the old
account is saved as a disk image to ensure the contents are kept.

Probably just as quick to just set up the new account though, and copy
back from the disk image. Back the account up as a precaution.

You need to be an admin account to do this, which you should be by
default. Or, you can log in as root and do it.

Regards

Santa
