ok, thanks for the clarification. Since  your last post, I added a 
third drive. I set it as slave to the one in the belly.

I now have in the bottom, a 60 and a 40 GB respectively.
in the top is a 60 tied as slave to the cdrw drive that is set to 
master. they all work and , when checked, last no slow downs occurred 
according to my observations.

Your logic does make sense to me tho.
