4x5 is large, cause real cameras are built from wood and we measure film
in inches
Semantics. I said medium, because I recalled seeing them referred to as medium format when I was moderately interested in purchasing one.
Already here. I don't know about sensors for real cameras, but LF cameras
can use a scanning back. Now, if you meant to say "affordable 24MP
cameras," well, in five years time.
Based upon the original post, affordable is assumed. Also, the post was about 35mm equivalent thus ruling out the large format cameras.
Of course, as I said, you'll be prying my 4x5 and a sheet of plus-x from
my locked fingers. :) (see, there's that face, implying a humourous
comment)
This can be debated. Today's printers can do a lot more than 300DPI.
Debate it with your professional lab techs, then. The Fuji Frontier, Agfa
D-Lab, and Noritsu digital minilabs are all 300 or so (I think the Noritsu
is 320). As for a Lightjet? I'm not so sure, however what the internet
seems to be telling me is 406dpi, but optimally at 200 to 300dpi.
Epson has been releasing 1440x720 dpi printers for close to 5 years, and current offerings are 5760x1440dpi. Yes they are flattened dots (ovals), and max resolution requires photo paper, but that's still a bit better than 300dpi. HP offers up to 4800x1200 dpi.
Again, we're trying to remain affordable. Fuji Frontier and Agfa D-Lab are professional photo processors and aside from walking into the local one-hour-photo lab are a bit inaccessible to the average consumer.
