Right. Because everyone has a 4x5 medium format camera. 4MP is close enough to photo quality for the basic user that just wants to be able to print at 8x10 or smaller. 5-6MP is enough to allow skin and hair detail (more than enough for an artist's photo reference). If you're waiting for a 24MP camera, it's going to be a while.
The only thing I want to change in your thoughts is to pay closer heed to
DPI of the camera and in Photoshop. Remember you'll want to match the DPI
to what you print at, most inkjets and digital labs will use a 300DPI
file. Anything more is wasted.
This can be debated. Today's printers can do a lot more than 300DPI.
