Microsoft actually designed and sold a CP/M (CP/M-80 in this case) card
for the Apple ][.

The package included a Z-80 card of rather unique design, and a copy of
CP/M on a ][-formatted floppy disk.

Naturally, this strategy was designed to sell certain CP/M-based
Microsoft software products to Apple ][ owners ... primarily various
compilers and the predecessor of Excel.

Someone else made an 8-inch floppy controller for the ][, and that
allowed use of Microsoft's (and many other's) standard releases which
were then on 8" diskettes.
