I.E., means, "for example" (translated from latin i believe, more old world
elitism), which is entirely different than IOW or "in other words".  one has to
be careful with suck silly acronyms and abbreviations, in fact they often have
more than one meaning depending on who you are talking to about what field. 
then again, to an extent, iow has become or was at once somewhat elitist, that
is traditionally one of the reasons for using jargon, to impress and keep out
the masses (in addition to the legitimate need for new terms for new things).
