i'm sure they've designed cases, but frankly, apple has no business designing monitor electronics, they simply don't do enough volume to have developed the skills and maintain the right engineers. very, very few people who can design a logic board could design good monitor electronics. i know, i've fixed a lot of monitors and they are by far the trickiest and most touchy electronics around. a lot of monitor design is lessons learned the hard way making tv sets and making monitors for years. apple may develop specs, and the case, they don't get to or want to design the electronics unless they are nuts!
