well, that is truly surprising. it does explain why the mac monitors i've worked on have seemed so strange (though all the monitor makers have their own quirks in their designs, and their own traditional design flaws, to the point that knowing the brand makes it easier to fix a dead monitor because an experienced tech knows the traditional failings and where best to start), they are different than what others make in bad ways, i'd suggest not using mac monitors, they simply don't have the expertise as the history of mac monitor defects would suggest.
i've also taken apart mac keyboards, they are more or less "normal" or typical of other designs, and there really isn't anything that hard about designing a keyboard. designing good monitor electronics on the other hand is a hard thing to do with out a long history of experience and designers who've been doing it for a while. monitors are analog, work at relatively high frequencies, and high voltages. the high voltages are not just on the second anode, but also in the deflection electronics which truly, truly take a beating trying to drive a highly inductive deflection yoke in a linear manner at relatively high frequency. just designing deflection transistors and chips has proven challenging for many semiconductor makers, though most do eventually figure it out or just over-engineer things enough that they survive over time. monitors also have a real challenge maintaining convergence of the 3 colors and making the display somewhat linear horizontally and vertically. multisync also makes things a lot harder, which is why it was somewhat revolutionary when companies began doing it, and why some of the older multi-syncs were not so good. optimizing electronics for one frequency is a lot easier than making them work over a relatively large range of frequencies, and that's what a multisync monitor has to do. to be honest, as far as case design, my nec multisync xp21 looks as nice as any case apple has made (though i could only "afford" it by buying one that was reconditioned, it is a really nice multisync). the tilt/swivel base on this nec monitor is possibly the nicest i've seen, and they actually provided a non-ventilated shelf on the top front of the monitor where people like to put things, with the top vents farther back. i've got several pieces of junk up there now. seriously, i'd really, really like to be able to run the mac os on non-apple hardware, their brief stint into cloning demonstrated that software is apple's strength, and hardware design has been a major weakness. i love, love the mac os and hated windows long before i was aware of an alternative (even preferring dos programs to windows based programs), on the other hand, pc hardware is usually a lot better and it's even possible to select modules from different vendors and build a really sweat pc, much harder with a mac, unless you do it with an older logic board that can be purchased for a reasonable price and put it in a good case with a superb power supply and other components. then again, the clone logic boards were better than the mac logic boards of the same vintage. it's not a religion folks, it's just a brand name that belongs to a large corporation that is as soul-less as any, but they have put out some really sweat operating systems. if it is a religion for you, i'd suggest getting a much fuller life, and a more human one. there simply aren't any "good" corporations, that would require a soul, which is beyond anything purchasing or r/d can come up with. the corporate world is a battle field, as brutal and inhumane as any, it's just less visible to most, and that lack of visibility is no accident. the longer they've existed, the less i've liked apple. i truly, truly loved the old apple II's, and still like their cpu's, but less and less so over time as they do more and more to unfairly maintain their own profits.
