Also, I noticed in Disk Utility an option to create an image of a selected volume---interestingly, it allowed me to select the damaged drive, and it started writing what appears to be a correctly-sized image...I had to stop the operation, though. The problem there is that the image may be approximately the same size as the original volume (about 111 GB), and I don't have enough free space to store an image of that size---unless I add another blank storage device. Getting another drive is no problem; the question is, WHAT will the resulting image contain?
