A really handy freeware Mac identifier is MacTracker http://www.mactracker.ca. They list both the "Apple memory capacity" as originally published and the "actual memory capacity" based on today's RAM. It also gives all the detailsof cache, bus, ports, etc. fro every Mac. Very handy is you are looking at purchases on eBay or such.

I understand Panther is pickier about RAM, and so you need to be sure to get good quality RAM. My friend who's a certified Apple genius recently recommended http://www.crucial.com for my new RAM.

Quality wise Crucial is as good as they come. I have used them, exclusively, for Mac, peecee and printer RAM for many years. Never had a bad stick of RAM from them. More expensive than some, but shipping is free and customer service will reach a real, native english speaker. <G>
