I have to put in my 2 cents here. I have three Mac's networked at home. My
daughters 2 B&W G3's and my G4 Digital audio.

I realize that Rad Craig asked about a G4, but price wise you would be able
to pick up a very good B&W rev 2 400, for about $250.00 usd. If you are new
to the Mac platform it is a good way to get upgradeable hardware for a low
price. It could also be used as the server when you commit to a G4.
ZIF processors are relatively cheap now if you want upgrade, and many of us
will not be able to take advantage of the 64 bit processors for a while
unless you use Photoshop 7 all of the time. Just make sure that you get the
rev 2 board. It is a lot easier to add drives, and front and backside cache
is faster.

The reason I brought this up is that no one has mentioned the B&W. I only
have these 2 because the Beige G3 were such an issues with OS X upgrades.
The G3's ( a rev 1 350, and rev 2 400) are both running Panther 10.3.2 with
no issues. Both have 512 Mb RAM, the stock ATI 16 Mb video, and after market
LG DVD/CDRW drives. The only things missing (newer hardware) from the B&W
is AGP video. That is only required if you are going to use Final Cut Pro or
iDVD for video work.

Don't get me wrong, I would not trade my Digital Audio for anything (except
maybe a G5 Dual). I have upgraded the processor to a 933 MHz (It is a 7450
chipset, just like the MDD Mac's) from http://www.fastmac.com/index.php,
added a Pioneer 106 drive, new HD's and 1.5 Gb memory .

Rad Craig,

If you are set on a G4, please look at the Digital Audio Model. The bus
speed of 133 MHz was the clincher for me. While not as fast as the MDD
models @180 , it is still 33% faster than the Sawtooth for a few dollars
more.

Good Luck,
Wade Perry
