That's kinda what I was thinking; the Sawtooth already has a perfectly good AGP card, so why replace it? I recall reading somewhere that there may be a compatibility problem with Panther and *some* third-party video cards, so you'd want to investigate that before just swapping out the card anyway. I don't know the details; I investigated just enough to learn that I didn't have to worry about it.

My Sawtooth is fully capable of supporting dual monitors (dual, not just mirrored) with its factory video card, but it does not support Quartz Extreme. I have no idea what that really means; the only difference I'm aware of in practical terms is that in fast user switching (available only under Panther), I don't get the cool rotating cube effect. But I don't have any complaints about the quality of the display, or the speed of screen re-draws or anything.

I saw Eric's reply about just continuing to use your PC as a server. He's probably right; you probably don't need to switch to a Mac for your server. But should you want to, you can probably use just about any old Mac. I've heard of people using *really* old Macs as servers, but .... why? Some more information about what it's actually "serving" would help. If you want to host a Web site, for example, a Mac is extremely easy to set up as a Web server, probably easier than any Windows box ever dreamed of being, but if you use .asp pages on your site, then the Mac's Unix/Apache Web serving won't fill the bill. But if your current server works, why bother messing with it?

I'm glad to hear that with your IT background you're open to trying the "Mac way." Yes, I think you'll really like it. But I have to recommend going no older than the Sawtooth. Newer is always better, of course, but if you're going to buy an older used Mac, I really don't think you could go wrong with the Sawtooth.

I think, even without Quartz Extreme, Fast User Switching still works in Panther. It just doesn't display the fancy graphic, instead it shows a blue screen or some nonesuch...
