Hi I've got a G3 B/W (formerly 300 mhz) that now has a superduper Sonnet Encore/Zif G4 1GHz processor upgrade (or was a little while ago). Originally I had a similar problem...software updater told me that there was an update for my version of OSX (at the time 10.2 to 10.2.3; I think it was). After everything working fine with the new processor installed, I went ahead and updated. It wouldn't start up right after that... "gray screen with apple" and no swirling circle below. In the end, I had to put back the old card and erase install OS 9 then install OS X. It wasn't a disaster because everything was backed up or on my laptop.
The support guy at Sonnet seemed to think that there wasn't anything wrong with the card compatibility but rather with that update of OSX. Now to my question...I've done it again. I tried to update OS X (10.3.2 to 10.3.3) and I get the same gray apple screen. I've repaired permissions from the OSX cd start up and that didn't help. Why doesn't this work? Shouldn't I be able to run an OSX update? I've sent the Sonnet guys this question but in case they don't respond or don't know the answer, I'm asking it here. I also am curious why a G3 B/W can't boot through the fire wire. What controls this function? Is it a particular component or just the way it's wired up?
