a couple of things for those who don't read labels.... rubbing alcohol is 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water, which means it is not mostly water (and besides, the mix does make it a better solvent for some mixtures of compounds).
secondly, while acetone does dissolve many plastics (but not all, some are completely immune to it), it is not used for pvc pipe, a blend of more aggressive solvents and pvc resin is used (actually, pvc is hard to glue, the only other adhesive i've ever found that sticks at all is silicone caulk). definitely don't use acetone to clean plastic without knowing what type is used on all of the parts (something like a print head has many parts and likely more than one type of plastic may be used to get different properties). you can also buy 100% isopropyl alcohol at some drug stores. if you want a stronger but still safe solvent, ethanol, i.e. "everclear" is a good option i've used (though expensive), it also doesn't leave any residue as it is purified by distillation (though it is 5% water, you can't a water/ethanol blend with a higher alcohol content by distillation from a water/ethanol mix). i don't mean to be nasty, i just hate to see wrong information spread and absorbed by unwitting minds, it's how knowledge is destroyed. ----- > SNIP > I can't help but wonder if Nail Polish Remover (the acetone kind) wouldn't > do a better and faster job.
