or, in the case of Epson's, instead of buying cleaning cartridges (or for any machine where cartridges are just ink), you can just fill an old ink cartridge with everclear and/or rubbing alcohol. i did this myself to fix an old apple color printer with severely clogged heads, it took a couple of refills but eventually it was completely clean (after sitting for several years i suspect)!
of course this is far easier if you live in a rational state where you can buy syringes and needles to inject your solvents into the ink cartridges. fortunately wyoming and colorado, and nearly any farming state will allow you to buy any size syringe and needle you want at farm stores. they are very, very useful for a number of things like glues and oils, besides there normal uses on the farm (not to mention syringes without needles make great squirt guns! very popular when i was in school). of course you can also get "blunt" needles online which are generally more suitable for glue and oil etc. (and you don't have to worry about pricking yourself...). syringes are also very handy for solder paste and flux for us electronics nuts that work with surface mount parts. in any case, if you do this i recommend everclear, since it has the lowest water content (and also has very few insoluble impurities), at least once things have started to clear (a little water in the mix may well help initially, both for solubility and volume of vapor when evaporated, which is how an inkjet works- a micro heating element vaporizes some of the solvent in the ink which blows a drop out the end of the capillary, very clever!), and you may need to print some to flush all of the solvent out (preferably after running it until it's out of solvent).
