I can understand your concern with Epson printers when the head clogs and
won't clear. I just dumped a cheapie Epson 830 with a head that wouldn't
clear. It's economical to replace the heads yourself on more expensive A3
and wide format printers but not most A4 types. At work I've cleared many a
bad clog by leaving a folded paper towel under the head soaked in ammonia
and isopropyl alcohol, and used a dropper to apply to the cleaning station
prior to running cleaning cycles.

Although Epson print heads can clog, I've got a 1200, 1160 and 1290s, all A3
I use for my interest in photography, and never had problems with them. The
one big advantage is the range of specialist archival inks you can obtain,
not the same for other makes. The 1160 uses Permajet VT blax B&W, the 1290s
Lysonic Fotonic, the 1200 the original Epson dyes, no clogs. There are also
continuous ink systems for some Epson and Cannon printers, but none I've
seen for HP.

Having said that, although only A4, I just bought an HP 7660 yesterday for
its capability to print archive quality B&W with the 59 cartridge to their
premium plus matt (actually is a nice pearl, don't know why they call it
matt), but am surprised at how it eats up ink compared to the Epson's. The
cartridges are more expensive here as well, probably due to having the head
included. If HP made an A3+ printer utilising the 59 cartridge, ideally a
higher capacity one, they might make inroads into Epson's specialist market,
but none as yet.
