>I feel as though I am experiencing an obsolescence/money sinkhole. The LW and LW II printers are so reliable, they can easily last 1,000,000 impressions, although most discard theirs before 100,000.
Operating the machine with an old wand, or no fuser cleaner wand at all is the usual cause of a damaged fuser roller. There is no "usual" casuse for failure of the dc controller, although incorrect operation of same can be traced to defective sensors. I suppose the IIf IS technically obsolete as it has no ethernet capability, whereas the IIg does. Otherwise, they are the same I/O board. The 300 dpi limitation of the LW and LW II series is another factor in their obsolescence. The LW Pro 630 (EX marking engine) is perhaps the best of the LWs. I take that back ... the 16/600 is, what with its EX+ marking engine and its very fast AMD 29000 RISC processor (the Pro 630 was the last of the 68K-based LWs, IIRC). An LJ 4 with a PostScript card (thereby making it into a 4M) and an RJ45 network card is a good substitute for a Pro 630, although very complicated documents which will properly print on a Pro 630 will cause a LJ 4M to barf. (The LW IIntx was the "reference standard" within Adobe Systems during the time a friend was manager of their printer softwre test group. I don't know what is Adobe's reference standard now. Certainly something with at least 600 dpi resolution). Anything from a lowly LW (CX marking engine) to a 630 or 16/600 (EX marking engine) can be kept working for nearly forever. And, because folks are discarding these monochrome printers for color ink jets (along with a tremendous increase in cost per page ... as much as $1 per page, vs. $0.03 for a LW, LW Plus, LW II or LW Pro), the source of good spare parts for these printers is almost endless. Your IIf is not a sink hole, just in need of a little TLC. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
