Could you boot from a fire wire drive if you used a separate firewire 
controller card? does the bios' limitation also effect cards that might 
have their own bios?

No... You can not boot from an external firewire drive on a secondary
firewire card with the B&W G3 or the Yikes G4. It is a limitation of the
mother board BIOS.

The only SCSI card that can a B&W G3 can boot from is the Adaptec 2930CU
PCI/SCSI adapter (with the APPLE firmware). If you are hard pressed to boot
from an external device your only option is the Adaptec 2930CU. I have one
:-) and it works fine.

To select different operating systems on different hard drives I prefer to
boot from the Mac OS X install CDROM #1 by holding down the "C" key. Bring
up the installer menu, and then bring up the start up drive control panel. I
can never remember the 8 finger VULCAN MIND GRIP you have to perform on you
mac to boot from an alternative drive.
