The battery icon was charging (that Z is a lightning bolt ;-) and showed that way because of a different icon in the OS on the CD.
What most likely happened is that the Power Manager had gotten confused (probably because of running the battery all the way to 0%) which is annoying, but harmless.
Go to Apple's support site and look for 'reset power manager' in the KB, you'll find the directions for your powerbook.
