thanks for everyone's help.

i have another question.

since the used g4 prices are starting to come down, is it worth acellerating
this machine (266mh g3 tower, 300 megs, w/av card) to a g4?

ultimately, i would like to be able to edit video & sound and make my
own dvds,
but is it worth upgrading this thing, or would i maybe spend less money waiting
for the right g4 to come along?

It's probably best if you wait for the right G4 to come along, but it depends on how long 'ultimately' means to you, and how much you're willing to spend.

Just upgrading to a G4 will get you some speed, certainly. I'd stay away from the sort of full bore upgrade (CPU, Video HDD's etc) unless you get it really cheap, because it's just cheaper to get a G4 at that point.
