In my opinion, I would wait and get the G4. Since I moved from my G3 upgraded 7600 to the G4 450 Sawtooth, I have noticed an incredible increase in speed and the price I got for it on eBay was much cheaper than any accelerators I could possibly install. I paid just $300 for a G4 Sawtooth with 1.5 GB RAM two weeks ago, and have been much happier.
Now, for editing video, you may need to upgrade from the stock ATI card depending on what you mean by video editing. If nothing else, the AGP video card would be much more responsive than the PCI video card you are used to due to the wider and faster bandwidth between the AGP slot and the processor (it does not have to run at the much slower PCI bus speed and does not have to contend with other PCI cards for bandwidth on the PCI bus).
I currently make my own DVDs through an upgraded video card (the stock ATI does not have video inputs) and upgraded DVD burner (as opposed to the stock DVD-ROM)--but the total upgrades came to just under $200. So for $500 all told, I got exactly what I wanted and needed--plus increased speed and dynamic responses, whereas the necessary upgrades to get the 7600 up to G4 capability and the DVD burner would have given me the capability--although it would have been much much slower and more expensive.
So, I recommend you wait and either look on eBay, Craigslist, or the LEM Swap list for that perfect Mac. I did, and it was well worth it to me.

since the used g4 prices are starting to come down, is it worth acellerating this machine (266mh g3 tower, 300 megs, w/av card) to a g4?
ultimately, i would like to be able to edit video & sound and make my
own dvds,
but is it worth upgrading this thing, or would i maybe spend less money waiting
for the right g4 to come along?
