However, when I select the hard drive as the startup disk, it will not boot
from the hard drive, it just hangs with a blank screen.

Correction: If I use an HFS+-formatted hard drive without an OS, I get a blank screen. If I use a hard drive from another machine with OS 9.1, I get a screen with alternating ? and Mac happy face icons.

But no matter what I do, I can't get the G3 firmware update to install on the hard drive, and I can't boot from the/any hard drive. The G3 firmware update wants to install on the CD, but of course that's impossible.
