Subject: Re: B&W G3 Help Needed
Have you tried zapping the PRAM? cmd-option-P-R as it boots.

Unfortunately, the tech people removed the cpu, hard drive, RAM and video
card. I replaced them with parts from my stock. The cpu is from a beige 266
MHz desktop.
I can get the B&W to boot from the CD drive, using either the AppleCare
disk, an OS 9 install disk, or a Norton disk. I get a startup chime, the
system boots, and I get a standard desktop. The hard drive, which came from
the G3 266 desktop and has OS 9.1 installed, shows up on the desktop, as do
all of its desktop aliases.
However, when I select the hard drive as the startup disk, it will not boot
from the hard drive, it just hangs with a blank screen. I also get an error
message telling me the firmware is out of date and must be updated. I get
the same message when I try to run the G3 firmware update from the CD Extras
folder on the hard drive. Attempts to do a clean OS 9 install on the hard
drive while booted from the OS 9 CD also results in a firmware update
message. I've read the B&W service manual and have reset the motherboard per
its instructions.
What is the problem? Do I need a B&W-specific install CD? Do I need a
B&W-specific 300 MHz or better cpu (though Apple System Profiler shows the
266 to be running at an overclocked 300)? Or am I missing something quite
simple? This is my first experience with a B&W machine, and I'm baffled.
Thanks in advance for your help. -- Jim
