Hello, I am the ultimate new Mac user, I just purchased a used G3 B&W from my school.Welcome to Mac-land! The B&W G3 is a great choice for your first Mac. It's the first Mac with "New World" architecture (more compatible with the newest OS's, including OS X), and has FireWire, USB, 10/100 ethernet, etc.
Sorry, but the B&W requires OS 8.6 or better. It will run on 8.5.1 only if it's the special version that came bundled with the machine when it was new. As someone has already mentioned, OS 9.x is the choice for most users who don't go with OS X. Other World Computing is one good place to shop for OS; look here: http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Page.cfm?Parent=246&Title=Software&Template=<OS 8> Does anyone know if this OS is compatible with my machine?
I have read different things on different websites, and this confusion may be due to the name Powermac; I guess different machines share the name or something? Until I can get an operating system going on it, I can't find out much about the version and memory and thingsYeh, Apple has a tendency to keep the same name for an entire model line, so you need to do a little homework to find out which is which.
To find out which Revision machine you have, check the IDE controller (the "CMD" chip by PCI slots). The chip's number on Rev 2's ends in 402; it's the "better" logic board, less potential problems adding hard drives, etc.
I am just so way sick of windows I can't stand it and they really blew it when they put out service pack 2 for XP. I want my machine to work the way I want it to and windows just plain sucks.
I'm pretty sure we'll all second that emotion 8^) You're gonna love the Mac experience.
