Hmmmm. Well, I know what USB is and that my Beige G3 doesn't have it. And
I've heard of and seen plenty of discussion on this list about
"Firewire," but that I can't claim any actual knowledge of or experience
with it (those posts eluded me completely). I may be a few steps ahead of
Daniel when it comes to Macs since I have nine and a half years on him as
a Mac owner and user, but when it comes to the really technical stuff,
no. So, in terms a simpleton (me) and also a Mac newbie (Daniel) can
understand -- what exactly IS Firewire and what is so important about it?

Firewire is faster than USB and typically used for not only faster transfers, but video as well. My video camera has a USB post for photos and a firewire port for the video....

And why would my Beige G3 not have it (apparently it mustn't, if that's
why I can run OS 8.1 on my G3 and Daniel can't on his), but his B&W G3
would?

Your Beige is a different series G3 than the B&W's which also came with different operating systems. You both can install a firewire card as long as you have the operating system or extensions to support it.

I actually had a B&W at work that ran OSX just excellently..... If I were you, Daniel, I would go for 10.2....
