My rec would be to try a few out, specifically to see how long it takes to write to the storage media, and how quickly the camera recovers to take another pic. I have a Minolta Dimage that takes forever to write to the SD storage, and I'm wondering if it's the type of SD card I have or the camera itself. A friend has a Nikon SLR digital and it is so quick, it's incredible. 'Course the price is incredible too. Check out Sony and their various cybershots, I think that's what they call them. They use XD media but I've seen that they are fast and very well priced. Depending on the megapixels you get, you'll need media also. 256 megs cost about 35 bucks here in Toronto so that or more is now a good deal. Figure 50 bucks for NiMh batteries and charger. Personally, I wouldn't go beyond 3 or 4 megapixels. I won't print them, that's for sure and anything you get at 3-500, with more megapixels is probably going to be lacking in something else. Optical zoom is mandatory. Olympus makes some with 10X optical and with a tripod, that makes some sense. SLR is getting cheaper and the difference that makes in composing is incredible. Don't think you can do slr for 500 but it might be woth looking into, for a deal. My couple cents, fwiw.
