PRINTING!

Remeber, we're talking real budget here and I can
donate a Mac which has a real value of less than $100,
however, as they are (successfully) currently using
an LPT laser printer, the Mac CAN'T print to it...

What printer is it? A USB-Parallel adapter is reasonably cheap, less than $100 certainly.

So if I want to help them upgrade from a Pentium 400
to a B&W 300 (yes, even I regard 400-300MHz as an
upgrade) I have to buy a new printer.

We have three printers here at work, and only the one
in my room is PostScript compatible. As the sole Mac
user I cannot even dream about printing to the other two.
(HP 1200 and some Xerox thing...)

OS X prints quite happily to the HP 1200, and what Xerox printer is it? Gimp-Print will work, most likely. Gimp-Print (built into 10.3, and installable on 10.2) works with all sorts of non-postscript printers.

In fact, I ended up using the PCL driver for my HP 4M at home because it's an early HP4 and has a different postscript version than the built-in driver in 10.2, and I get weird PS errors. Using the Gimp-Print PCL driver for it works like a charm.
