David Elmo writes, on OS X vs. OS 9,
<You can't really tell and trust the difference from reading a book!>
Well, it's a starting point, isn't it? Especially for someone who
wasn't
actually going to risk putting it on her Mac? Now why would a 9.2.2
girl
like me want to read a book like that? In addition to simple
curiosity,
in the event I ever do, for whatever reason, wind up using OS X, I'd
rather read the book BEFORE, for example, I make the sudden
discovery on
an OS X Mac that my dearly beloved Apple Menu -- which as a Mac
Classic
die-hard I can't live without -- is GONE. ("And what in the hell is
THIS...Dock thing?") Or that now if I want to make a new folder, it's
"SHIFT-command-N" instead of just "Command-N."
or how you make aliases or manage windows or horror, how you select
files in a list (Command click indeed!) and on and on...
Yersinia, it /is/ a starting point and you are quite right. I am a
lazy sod and thought I could just get on with it and manage and I
have been struck in the face by the biggest wet fish in my life. My
aim now is to be the worst case of a loyal os x-n where n= or > than
1 user to move to x. At least in that I might just succeed and
flourish....
By the way, if I remember correctly, you really like OS 9 better
than OS
X. So why persist with an OS you don't like? Can't you wipe your HD
clean, reinstall OS 9 and go back to what you're comfortable with?
Now don't be like that Yersinia! I can boot into 9 any time I like,
but a spell has been cast onto me and I am managing with X and using
Classic for old apps. If there were no magic spells, no compulsions,
no real Apple wizards and witches, I would be free to exercise my
freedom. But that is not how the real world is. Was Alice free to get
out of Wonderland any time she wanted? No! I am as helplessly caught
in AppleXland. I might or might not wake up.
(BTW, I offer a really terrific prize to anyone who can tell me how
to file share a 7300 on 9 with a G4 QS on Tiger using a cross over
cable. Just tell me the first few steps and I will tell you if I can
get that far and am ready to go on...)
