This takes up about 3/8" strip on the far right side of the screen. Why did Apple standardize on the dock on the bottom? Most people have landscape monitors, not portrait, and have more screen real estate left and right as opposed to top and bottom.

I've got more space at the bottom of my screen than on the side, I've got 24 icons on my dock right now. On the sde that doesn't fit very well.

Also, I keep it hidden, anyway, so it's never in the way unless I need it.

Apple put it on the bottom, because the menu bar is at the top.

Also, I use Desktop Manager on all my Macs, and have set the sides of the screen to switch between virtual desktops. <http:// desktopmanager.berlios.de/> Despite the warnings about 'Alpha quality' I've never had it give me any problems on my Mac. A highly recommended utility, particularly for those with small screens like iBooks or iMacs, though it works on large screens as well.
