This is a G4 733 DA using 10.3.9 and OS-X Mail. I had removed the
internal modem card from this 733 and used it in a different G4, and in
the meantime bought a replacement modem for the 733. The new modem
arrived today and I installed it in the 733, but when I try to connect
to the .pop dialup account, Mail gives me a message "Error: the POP
server is not responding." Another time it gave me the message: "Cannot
connect on Port 25." Also, the little telephone symbol does not appear
in the menu bar.
To see if the trouble might be the new modem, I put the 733's original
modem back into it (removing it from the other G4, where it was working
fine), but nothing changed; I still get the same error messages. I put
the new modem in the other G4, where it works fine, proving that both
modems are good, but neither one will work in the 733, or at least does
not result in any connection being made to the server. The phone wire
is new, and the wall connection is the same one used by the G4 whose
modem works and does make connections to the server.
The same error messages occur when the phone wire is disconnected from
the wall or the Mac, which indicates to me that the modem may not be
internally connecting to the phone wire when it's plugged in. I was
pretty careful when plugging and unplugging modems from this 733, but
nevertheless, is it possible that I mayhave damaged something that now
prevents the internal modem from connecting to the phone wire when it's
plugged into the back of the Mac?
Thinking it might be a software instead of a hardware problem, I tried
throwing out the mail preference (.plist) and restarting, repairing
permissions, and fsck -fy-ing, but there is no change.
So I've run out of things to check. Anybody got any ideas?
By the way, I bought this 733 a few years ago at the local CompUSA, and
I know they have a service department; does anyone know if they are
able to diagnose hardware problems, if that's what this turns out to
be?
Thanks,
Tom
