Apple cancelling its Christmas party this year is nothing really shocking. The vast majority of companies around the world have cancelled Staff Christmas parties (if they celebrate them) in lieu of offering a cheaper staff activities day or forgoing anything all together.
With regards to the article, the end verdict that Kingsley-Hughes comes to is that he doesn't think that cheap Macs are the answer. Heck, even the article extracted summary line sums it best: "Apple's doing the right thing in not being panicked into bringing out cheap systems. Why? Because price cuts are a one-way street." I'd have to agree with him there. When I think about it, considering the slew of computers my parents have (multiple IBM Thinkpads of the X24 generation and a few old HPs and Toshibas), and the amount of money they have spent on add-ons, software, etc... yet still they are deeply unhappy with their computer experience... this can all be solved with one Mac Mini and two MacBooks. At comparable or less money to what they ahve spent to date on their PCs. The uniqueness of their product offerings and the sheer usability and power of the OSX operating system are Apple's unique selling points (USP)s in today's market, and gives them their competitive advantage over others. Sure I'd like the kit to be slightly cheaper (who wouldn't?) but for what I get out of it? I'm happy to pay a little extra. That's not to say that I'm not tempted into building a Hackintosh (just for the geek-points alone). Well that's just my two cents worth. ~Jaime~ 2008/12/18 Wallace Adrian D'Alessio <[email protected]> > > What many here have said for a long time finally makes a ZDnet article. > > http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3192&tag=nl.e539 > > Someone here who took umbrage at those who wanted a low cost Machine > to run an Apple OS derided them as wanting "Cheap Kit", Cheap Kit? the > market speaks in sales. > > Cheap kit sells large volumes. > > Apple has canceled it's Christmas party this year. > > Steve is said to be on the way out.
