Profit margins are the prime determining factor of the availability of R&D funding. For example, a semiconductor equipment manufacturer that I did a lot of contract work for targeted margins in the 40-50 percentile area. OTOH, they spent huge sums on R&D. I expect with Apples innovative line up that a lot of that margin also goes into R&D. If it didn't, we would not see the profit generating line up that others envy. I'm no fan of Apple corporate but I have to tip my hat regarding their products and marketing.
