I'm trying to use Disk Utility to create a disk image and on a first
attempt, I'm getting an Input/Output error. I selected Read Only with
no encryption. Maybe indicates a hardware problem? With my original
installation of 10.5 (Retail) I allowed verification and my DVD passed.

Currently making a second pass with DU, but will also try Toast.

Have decided to go back to 10.5.4 via Combo Updater.

Can I do the original install from hard drive pkg-s, or need to go to
the DVD? I suppose I'd need to go in and modify links here and there
to get it to look on the hard drive ... not something I want to do
this late in the evening. I can use the combo updater from hard
drive, although I made a CDRW copy for posterity.

Wish me patience ... will follow Steve's suggestion earlier.
