What about the basic $999 White MacBook? It's the only MacBook that
still has a firewire port, which is very important, to me at least.

I think that buying any PPC-based Mac at this point is of dubious
value. Once Snow Leopard comes out, Apple is officially leaving PPC
architecture behind. Also, you can run Windows on the Intel-based Macs
(if you must), and boot from USB 2.0 devices as well.

I'd go with the White MacBook. Just my $.02.
