I think it's inevitable that if you want to continue being productive on a Mac you'll have to go Intel or build a OSX/86 box if a real Mac is too much money for you. Eventually even the hobbyists will start to move away from PPC. Many Linux variants have already dropped PPC while others have made PPC versions a low priority. It will only get worse as time goes on. I could upgrade my G4 Powermac to a G5 right now if I wanted to, but what would that get me besides a faster machine that still can't run the latest software? As soon as budgets allow, go Intel. There is no future in upgrading to a faster PPC machine.
