That is unlikely, the 'improperly put away' issue only affects read/write media like flash drives, and is a warning about un- flushed write caches for that volume filesystem, it wouldn't affect the modem hardware. If this was the problem, it wouldn't mount on the G4 either, since the breakage happens on the device, not in the OS.

When the modem "mounts" on the Gigabit, it does so as a CD which opens up and contains the installation software. If you remove it without unmounting it, you will get a warning to the effect that the item was not closed properly and could suffer damage. Once the s/w is installed, the modem is initialized.

That it mounts as a CD indicates that it's read-only. Again, the warnings actually only pertain to devices that can be written to, not read-only devices. That it mounts onf the G4 means that even if it WAS a read-write device, it's ok.

Yes I agree. I spent almost an hour at the Cricket, (Corporate), store today and besides being insulted that I had a Mac, they couldn't ascertain a thing.

I believe the device is OK but something weird happened software-wise on the PowerBook.

I can mount a SD card/reader without problems etc.

I may have to resort to opening another bottle of Pinch...
