When the modem "mounts" on the Gigabit, it does so as a CD which

That it mounts as a CD indicates that it's read-only. Again, the
warnings actually only pertain to devices that can be written to,
not read-only devices. That it mounts onf the G4 means that even if
it WAS a read-write device, it's ok.
Yes I agree. I spent almost an hour at the Cricket, (Corporate),
store today and besides being insulted that I had a Mac, they
couldn't ascertain a thing.
I believe the device is OK but something weird happened software-wise
on the PowerBook.
I can mount a SD card/reader without problems etc.
I may have to resort to opening another bottle of Pinch...
