A call to tech support resulted in speaking with a Indian drone, "Martha" to no avail. Modem would not mount as a CD on the Powerbook G4 1.25MHz. After hanging up, decided to try it on the desktop, G4 400MHz Gigabit and yep, it mounted there. (As an aside, the modem contains the initialization/set up s/w. Only problem here is that the Gigabit only has USB I as opposed to USB II on the PowerBook.

So, am I on the right track thinking that somehow this modem was not "put away" properly on the Powerbook? If so, what steps might I take to recover it?

That is unlikely, the 'improperly put away' issue only affects read/ write media like flash drives, and is a warning about un-flushed write caches for that volume filesystem, it wouldn't affect the modem hardware. If this was the problem, it wouldn't mount on the G4 either, since the breakage happens on the device, not in the OS.

When the modem "mounts" on the Gigabit, it does so as a CD which opens up and contains the installation software. If you remove it without unmounting it, you will get a warning to the effect that the item was not closed properly and could suffer damage. Once the s/w is installed, the modem is initialized.

Try installing and running it on the Gigabit G4 anyway, you should be at least able to get it to work, albeit at slower speeds. If it works it's probably worth the $10-$15 for a USB2 card for the G4, WIndows has the same hardware requirements for USB2 as the Mac so ANY USB2 PCI card will work regardless if it says 'Mac compatible' or not.
On the powerbook, try the usual:

I hesitate to do this because for some reason, both Cricket and Nutzero installation processes change the settings in the network/ modem area and practically imobilize Internet Connect.

Safe Boot, to clear caches, etc

That I'll do.

Try it as a different user.

I could try that.

Check the simple stuff: make sure you haven't accidentally turned off the setting in Finder to show external media on the desktop.

I wouldn't even know where to begin doing that...
