Just wild speculation ... my first thought in a situation like this is that the device is not getting enough power/current. But usually I've only had that problem with external USB powered 2.5" hard drives. I would not expect power to be a concern here, but who knows. Unplugging every other device you can is a good place to start. Trying to use the device via a powered USB hub might be another.
