Oi, don't knock Pong, do you know the table-tennis game on the Nintendo
Entertainment System is the only game ever that I can play as an absolute
equal with sighted persons, even win absolutely? Anyone who doesn't have
that game is missing a real treasure.
We don't need mouse support, but, what I'm curious about Dakota, is what do
you mean sighted persons are interested in audio games? What I mean is,
whenever I've showed an audio game to a sighted person, it's more like a
novelty interest, they'll try it a bit and also think"OOH, how cute this, an
actual game which there blind friend can play," but, as you say, because it
doesn't have cool graphics, even if it's multiplayer, they won't play it
much with their blind friend, also because their games are much more
sophisticated. Instead of playing blind games with sighted persons, I'm
usually left with teaming up with a sighted person playing with/against
other sighted persons, doing rather borring stuff like firing for that
person. I know there are other games which you can sort of play against
sighted persons on the NES, but none gave you that absolute sheer equality
which table tennis did. You could play boxing and MC and such, but that
depended on the sighted person's style of fighting. I know of my friend who
could play against sighted persons because they fought fare, but you got
some who would fight like chicken, throwing one punch and running away, etc,
and it was hard for the blind person to counter this. Sorry I can't talk
about the newer stuff, I still am only have my wonderful, lovely NES with my
game collection, I played DoubleDragon before my cousin accidentally stood
on my fifty-two-in-one. I do think that it's also not just graphics, but
sighted gamers would never play blind games even if they had good graphics
because we really have no idea about how much more sophisticated sighted
games are compared to blind games. I'm not knocking blind game developers,
just as Thomas says, these companies have millions to develop products. One
thing I also wonder is whether we also put too much pressure on our
developers. We are in such a hurry for developers to release stuff, that
maybe some games are released without impleminting many features? With Phil,
Thomas and many other developers they take time, but in the end you get a
high-quality game, but maybe other developers feel rushed and just release
whatever, cutting back on quality for time's sake.
