I consider myself a definite nintendo purist, but I'd be willing to 
sacrifice the classic feel of the game just to get a feel for what mario 
used to be like back in the day, since the only real experience I have with 
it is listening to my brother play.

I agree, double dragon would make an awesome game, especially with the 
weapons and all. Double Dragon II was my favorite because of all the 
platforming elements. I could actually beat the first 3 levels, the city 
streets with the building climbing, the airport which was basically just a 
straight level as I recall, and the helicopter, where you were inside a 
copter with 4 or 5 guys and you had to either beat them into unconciousness 
or knock them out of the copter doors before the boss showed up. I could get 
most of the way through the fourth level but at the end of the level instead 
of a boss there was a giant system of gears and converor belts that you had 
to jump across in just the right manner. Would be cool to see a remake of 
something like that. The TMNT arcade games would make good accessible games 
as well.
