Hi there is a list, and it's configured to my headset for both playback and
recording. I just unplugged the headset, but when i put it back in sound
just comes through the speakers, so had to re-boot, which is anoying if
you're halfway through a game.

Hi Lori,
That's definitely not it. What he is talking about is when you open
the XP Volume Control, go to the Options menu, and select Properties
there should be a list of devices to configure. On my Windows XP
desktop my USB headphones show up as HP Digital Headset or something
like that. Yours may be called something different depending on what
brand and model of headset you have. All the same it should be obvious
which device is your headset and which is your sound card.
