Hello,
Back from Daytona and another trade show I attend immediately following the
NRBA show. Had a great time in Florida and greatly enjoyed the talks! I know
I have some U.fimbriatus documentation to catch up on and share with the
group, some interesting observations should be posted soon.
I also learned a bit about my Leos that were hatching with eye problems. I
received some advice that it is not linked directly to hypovitaminosis A,
but is actually hyper calcification which inhibits the systems ability to
assimilate vitamin A. The lack of vitamin A results in eye problems, but the
hyper calcification also leads to offspring that are smaller overall, have
shortened tails, and sometimes have a loose flap of skin under their chins.
Since my Leo progeny all show some if not all of these symptoms I'm going to
assume for the time being that I have found the problem, and will be moving
them off of a calcium based substrate and back onto paper towels. I will be
leaving the juvies on the calcium substrate since they are more dependant on
calcium for bone growth, and not simply egg production.
Whew!

As for the questions posted by Pablo;

>The Iguana light 5.0 and Reptisun 5.0 are the same bulb in a different
package. (Marketed for 1st time Ig owners).

>I don't know what Phosphorus does, but it is my understanding that too much
Phosphorus in the system will bond to available calcium and force the body
to pass it rather than use it, that is why there's the magic ratio of 2:1
for maximum calcium absorption.

>Here's my simplified understanding about what goes on with D3 and calcium
absorption; D3 acts as a catalyst delivering calcium to the needed areas of
the body. Calcium without D3 to bond with will not be deliver to bones or
calcium sacks and is simply passed. If your keeping nocturnal geckos with
ReptiSun bulbs, and you see the geckos basking within 9" or so of the bulb,
I would think any additional D3 supplementation is unnecessary and could be
potentially harmful (Hypervitaminosis). I personally keep my U.fimbriatus
with two Reptisun and offer no dietary D3.

>Finally, if anybody would like to receive the data gathered via independent
laboratory analysis on most common pet store UVB sources I would be happy to
send it out, just e-mail me a request with a snail mail address in the body.

Please let me know if I am misinformed in anyway in regards to the
information I'm posting!

Whew, So nice to see many of you in Daytona..Happy Herping!

Hi Pablo-
I'm no expert in Ca absorption or D3, but I can tell you what I know and
hope
I'm right.

<<[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

1)D3 is supposed to help metabolize calcium. Should I
give calcium with D3 to diurnal species who are in an
 indoor terrarium with reptisun?>>
Yes, this is the situation where you should use Ca with D3. An animal that
recieves ample amounts of natural sunlight will produce D3 for metabolizing
the Ca . Indoor animals under UV lamps and spot bulbs don't get anywhere
near
the amount of lux in natural sunlight. (100,000 lux in sunlight, I believe)

2)What are the effects of Phosphorus?
Sorry, out of my league, I think I saved a post that explained it, I'll try
to find it.

3)Do you know the difference between Repti Sun and
 Iguana Light?
I was told that they are the exact same bulb.

4)What brand do you recommend for artificial UV-B
light? (Zoomed ReptiSun, Zoomed IguanaLight, Triton
reptile UVB, ESU Desert 7 UVB)

I use the reptisuns, and I won two iguana lights at Geckonight!
Hope this helps-
Jason
