I've found the little ceramic dished to be more decorative than
functional. The gerbils just bury them and then when you want to feed
them you have to dig to find it (and I keep my litter pretty deep). So
what I do is after a tank cleaning I use the cute little ceramic dish and
I put it up on top of a cardboard box so it won't get buried. After about
48 hours all the cardboard is gnawed to bits, the ceramic dish has
disappeared and I just put a handful in directly into the cage somewhere
in the middle so not to get it in the potty corner until the next
cleaning. When the next cleaning comes around I discover the dish, wash
it and use it again (for a day or two).

Some one on the list gave the idea of feeding in a paper cup, after they
finish eating (or during) they just chew it up. They love this!

No matter where you put the food, they will eat some and transport and
store the rest.
