Hello all . I'm new to this .. I am having some
problems with my gerbils. We have 2 females and 1 male. 1 female
gave birth about a month ago to a tiny little litter of 2. After 2 weeks
they were both dead. No apparent wounds. The other female gave birth
the day before we lost these two. She had a litter of 4. They were
about 3 weeks old yesterday and I found 3 dead. I have since
seperated the mother of this litter with the remaining baby and am hoping that
it will survive and be a companion for her. My question is "why are the
babies dying". I was wondering if perhaps the momma just wasn't taking
very good care of the babies. They were in a pretty busy room in the house
but I have since moved them to a quieter spot. Although this is both the
females first litters it is not our first litters and previous to these ones we
have had success. I was wondering if it would be possible to supplement
the remaining babys food. It doesn't have it's eyes open yet but is
running all over the cage, I wonder when it will be fully weaned. I was going to
buy some baby oatmeal today to see if the baby woudl eat. I so want this
one to live.
