I have to do this myself, as I live in an apartment.  Though in some cases when
I have taken the gerbil to the vet, they ask if I'd bring the body by if they
die, so they can autopsy and learn from it.  My vet is quite knowledgeable but
still always looking to learn.

BTW this is one reason I have a memorial page on my site.  It hurts me that I
can't bury them and it helps a great deal to set up a spot for them on my
memorial page.  I generally cry like a baby while I'm doing it, but afterward I
feel much better.  It's sort of a virtual equivalent of putting flowers on a
grave.
