Jon is right, except that you should keep in mind that the 'dry' side of the primer shouldn't be much of a challenge to its packing. That is, if there is a lot of gas along the shaft, the seals down at the end of the piston are shot to hell, and need to be fixed. The packing at the nut is the last bastion, and serves only to wipe the tiniest last little bit of gas off the shaft before it gets near your fingers.
