When I look at the Sport Pilot limits, it seems like even an Ercoupe might be more plane than a Sport Pilot needs. If anybody is thinking seriously about this time in their lives, it would pay to get some experiences in 'two seat ultralights' of different classes. I know, a lot of pilots will say 'you wouldn't catch me dead in one of those things.' Just like a lot of people talk about two-seat sub-100HP conventional aircraft :-) Once you try it though, I think you'll find that a lot of the things which you like about the Ercoupe are things that you'll like about these little Rotax-powered bugs. It's like that first flying lesson: just screw up your courage, pull on your helmet, and go. Know, also, that if you don't like the way a Weedhopper flies, you might like the way a Quicksilver flies. If you don't like that, you might like an Avid (more solid) or a Weedhopper. One thing the Sport Pilot proposal will to is to start tearing down the 'wall' that seems to exist between pilots of 'regular' planes and ultralights. To me, that's all to the good, and will lead to the ultimate answer for pilots who can't get or don't want a medical.
