Hey folks. " Fabric also weighs many pounds less (I've heard the number 40 > lb. but can't confirm it.)" I wonder how this myth came up and why it will stay forever. When aluminizing the wings one fills the wing with 3 sheets of 0.024 aluminum. That is aluminum !! Not 1 inch thick steel !! The leading edge is already aluminized , so are the ailerons. The actual area to be filled is not soo much that I seriosly doubt a weight increase of 40 pounds. The cloth wing is covering the whole wing - all around the leading edge and needs to be soaked with paint. Nobody can tell me that paint is weightless. I bet if fairly compared, the wings do not differ much in weight. The reported weight changes are due to some questionable weight measuring methods after installing the sheet metal covering. The planes are not weighted every year and a lot of legal and illegal installations have been done over the years without checking the weight. Then when covering the wings the planes have to be put on scales and whoopla - an increase of 40 pounds.!! Yes increase of fourty pound over the last 20 years it should be called.. Just do your own math . Oh and one more thing . I strongly believe that now since the mandatory holes are in the wings , the cloth wings are not much better off. In between 20 years a lot can happen corrosion wise. Cloth wing, aluminum wing. Sorry I had to vent a little Hartmut Ed Burkhead wrote: > > ----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- > > Fabric wings - good.
